In A Nutshell
I have been accused of having a sense of humor, but I'll let you decide.
I am a U.S. Army veteran of the US Army Special Forces and the 82nd Airborne Division (a green beret and a paratrooper). I'm in pretty good shape for a guy who just qualified for Medicare.
Between a draft notice, time in the Army, and having to work for a living, it took me 10 years to get out of college. I had a number of jobs, everything from ditch digger to fast food cook to foreman of an offshore sandblasting crew.
The best job I could get after graduating from the University of New Orleans was as a manager trainee at an A&P grocery store.
I managed to get into data processing (computers) after about 6 months. I spent the next 35 years as a computer programmer/analyst, computer systems analyst, and an information systems security specialist.
I am happily retired, I don't miss work at all - I paid in to social security for 50 years and I really think that is enough. Right now, I am trying to to figure out how to spend the rest of my life.
The One I Am Looking For
I want somebody to spend time with, to talk to, and possibly to take short trips with. I retired in January 2014 to take care of my wife for the last 3 years of her life, we had 36 years together. Right now, I'm not interested in marriage, but I would like to have a close friend.
It is also important that you know that I like to go fishing frequently (about one weekend a month) - I do not use fishing as an excuse to hang out in bars or chase women - I like to fish, hang out with my fishing buddies, and drink beer. It's something I wasn't able to do for nearly five years.
I'd Just Like to Add
I am very easily amused, I can have a pretty good time just about anywhere. But I'm not sure about you. I prefer you that you decide where we go the first few times: I think you will be more comfortable with where we go and I won't have to worry about embarrassing myself with a bad decision.
I tend to be spontaneous, I do not like to over-analyze or over-plan anything that is supposed to be fun.
I enjoy traveling and sharing road trips with an open minded passenger. My favorite road trips are the Natchez Trace Parkway and the Blue Ridge Parkway. On trips, I prefer secondary roads to the interstate, maps rather than GPS, and I will admit when I am lost (but I always find a way out).

My Top Interests:
Nature and Outdoors
I like the Natchez Trace Parkway, Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway because of the scenery, the historic sites and the nature trails. These are very pleasant drives: the speed limits are low and, generally, there is not much traffic.
I like many kinds of music, The Byrds and Jimmy Buffett, The Grateful Dead, Candy Dulfer, The Who, Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle
I enjoy cooking and look forward to trying out new recipes I find in the newspaper, in magazines, or on TV.
